Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
